My son Tom was around three years old when he became completely transfixed by tractors, diggers, fire trucks and trains. If it had big wheels, he adored it. It seems to me that little kids have had a fascination with these big machines since the invention of gasoline itself!
My wife had heard about a very popular video about real construction vehicles on a building site and we decided to buy a copy. Tom was thrilled to see it drop through the letterbox and enjoyed it but soon became bored as there was no narration, no music, just a locked-off camera showing excavators and building equipment moving around. Being a professional songwriter and still very much involved in the creative industries, I decided to get a team together and go out make our own films and write the songs myself. We managed to get the lovely people at John Deere Inc to let us film their machines and, with the help of other companies who were happy to donate some video, we had the makings of a really great show. Once the edit was nearly completed, it was obvious to me where the songs should be and what they should be about. I found a great, local kids choir to sing the songs and a friend of mine narrated the show. We paid particular attention to making sure the narration was nicely paced and had fun yet educational content to keep young children engaged. Not an easy task, but we did it!
The result was Here Comes A Tractor. Three more programmes followed over the coming years in Digger, Fire Engine and Train. We won awards and for ten years, the programmes sold on DVD all over the world. Then, as the DVD market began to collapse, we felt we had to call it a day. After all, our children had grown out of all this stuff now and we very much felt we had achieved what we had set out to do. We were sad however, that future generations may not get to see these great shows.
Some years later, in November 2016, my wife had the idea to just see what would happen if we put the shows up on YouTube. It seemed that now maybe the time might be right. We thought of a new name, Kids Trucks TV (it does what it says on the tin, right?) and uploaded the clips. Well, nothing much happened for months and months. We had a few views but nothing at all to get excited about. Maybe we had miscalculated. Then, something strange happened. In March 2017 from tens and twenties of views, we started getting hundreds of views. By April, we were getting thousands of views. By May, hundreds of thousands of views. We were becoming, as my wife with much amusement exhalted… "YouTube sensations"! To date, the shows we created for our son all those years ago have had several million views each and our subscribers, who we simply can't thank enough for their support, are close to 10,000 with 1,200 new subscribers going every month.
So, here we are. The merry band of creatives who made the first shows have decided to get back together and make some new shows for our channel. Watch this space….
